AI professors are negotiating the new realities of academic research

This article reports on the challenges AI academics face in the new reality of research, noting that frontier AI research has shifted from academia to private companies, leaving universities unable to afford the GPUs needed for training frontier models and without access to the inner workings of Claude and ChatGPT. Through discussions at the AI2050 program meeting, it highlights scholars' concerns about funding and resource allocation.
