Tau Robotics launched its humanoid robot home cleaning service in San Francisco at the end of July, priced at $30/hour and by invitation only. CEO Alex Koch told ABC7 that current AI technology cannot fully autonomously control humanoid robots, so each robot has a human operator behind it, with AI only handling visual recognition and path adjustments.
Cost calculations show that Tau uses Unitree G1 EDU versions priced from over $20,000 to $70,000, with mainstream configurations around $30,000. With three-year depreciation, 250 working days per year, and 6 hours per day, hardware costs approach $7 per hour. Meanwhile, U.S. teleoperators typically earn $20-30 per hour, with a median of $25-28. These two items alone match the $30 price, not yet accounting for maintenance, insurance, etc.
Thus, Tau is ostensibly selling cleaning services but is actually subsidizing the operational data generated by operators at a loss. This human control data from real home scenarios is the scarcest raw material for training fully autonomous systems. China has already seen 'embodied intelligence data collectors' with hourly wages as low as 15-37 RMB, pushing this logic to the extreme.
