Anthropic announced the Claude voice mode upgrade via a blog post on July 23, 2026. Previously, voice mode only ran on Claude's smallest model, Haiku, which prioritized speed, but Anthropic acknowledged that 'it kept conversations fast, but not always deep.'
After the upgrade, voice mode extends to Opus and Sonnet models. The system automatically uses the model from the user's most recent text chat and allows switching models mid-conversation. The new feature allows users to interact with third-party connected apps via voice, including Gmail, Slack, Canva, and Google Calendar, provided the feature is enabled in settings.
Specific use cases include: rescheduling calendar meetings via voice request, turning a client proposal conversation into a one-pager in Canva, or instructing Claude to summarize all emails from a specified time period and reply to the most important ones.
Voice mode now supports 11 languages: English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Latin American Spanish.
However, the system cannot automatically detect language changes; users must inform Claude or adjust settings if they want to switch languages mid-conversation.
The update is available as a beta to all chat users, covering mobile, desktop, and web. Free users can only use the Haiku model and one third-party connection tool, but all languages are available.
Paid plan users can access all connection tools and all models, with voice conversations counting toward usage quotas.
