OpenAI pairs its GPT-5.6 public rollout with ChatGPT Work, a new agent that handles entire workflows

On July 9, 2026, OpenAI officially launched ChatGPT Work, an autonomous agent described as “capable of taking action across apps and files, staying with a project for hours, and turning a goal into a finished piece of work.” Unlike previous conversational AIs, ChatGPT Work is designed as an active executor: users only need to describe the desired final output, without breaking down each step.

According to OpenAI’s official blog and X platform announcements, ChatGPT Work can integrate with third-party apps such as Google Drive, Slack, and Salesforce, and can handle local files. Its core capability is long-term project engagement—when tasks are complex and time-consuming, the agent can keep working until completion, a feature far beyond traditional single-session dialogue models.

ChatGPT Work is powered by two key technical components: GPT-5.6 and Codex. GPT-5.6 is OpenAI’s latest publicly released large language model, claimed to be industry-leading in complex task reasoning, template matching, reference file understanding, and style preference adherence. Codex—previously focused on code generation and automation—has been integrated into the agent framework, granting it the ability to execute actions across applications.

OpenAI emphasized on X that GPT-5.6 brings ChatGPT to a ‘state-of-the-art’ level in ‘reasoning over complex tasks’ and ‘creating materials that match templates, reference files, and preferred styles.’ This combination means the agent can not only understand natural language goals but also autonomously plan and execute multi-step workflows.

ChatGPT Work is available on web, mobile, and desktop, but access depends on the user’s subscription plan; specific pricing and plan tiers have not been disclosed. According to THE DECODER, integrated apps include Google Drive, Slack, and Salesforce, but no detailed configuration requirements have been provided.

A report from Machine Heart (a Chinese tech media) mentions that ‘Codex has been merged,’ suggesting that Codex as a standalone product has ended and its functionality is fully embedded into ChatGPT Work. This information has not been directly confirmed by OpenAI.

ChatGPT Work marks a paradigm shift in AI agents from passive conversation to active workflow execution. If its claimed capabilities are verified in the future, it could redefine productivity tools for individuals and businesses—upgrading from ‘AI assistant’ to ‘AI colleague.’

However, the product has just been launched, and actual reliability, cross-app compatibility, and long-term task stability all lack independent testing.
